Researcher, BSL3/ABSL3 Laboratories (Biosafety Level 3/Animal Biosafety Level 3 Laboratories)

Job Description

The BSL3/ABSL3 Researcher is to write and update standard operating procedures (SOPs), to perform assays supporting research studies investigating high risk group (BSL2+, BSL3/ABSL3) pathogens and agents (especially viruses) with a focus on culturing, molecular characterizations, and host-pathogen interactions at Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center (iBG) in İzmir, TURKEY. Working under the supervision of the Core Facility Manager, the BSL3/ABSL3 Researcher will establish, optimize, perform and analyze virologic, cellular, microscopic, and/or immunologic assays using in vitro and in vivo models to help understanding pathogenesis and transmissibility of diseases.


  • Helps writing standard operating procedures (SOPs) with the supervision of Core Facility Manager
  • Provides extensive training and orientation based on SOPs to the new lab users and keeps personnel documents
  • Follows up-to-date national and international regulations on biosafety and biosecurity measures
  • Prepares specimens, samples and solutions for research purposes; assists with design of experiment; arranges physical set-up; assists in research experiment and analysis of data
  • Monitors and maintains lab equipment; performs simple repairs and maintenance
  • Stores and disposes of all biological and chemical waste used in laboratory work
  • Maintains supply inventory; reorders as necessary
  • Maintains freezer inventories, updates them on a regular basis
  • Helps with in vivo studies at the ABSL3 lab and maintain daily care, when and if needed
  • Supervises the personnel during annual shutdown of the facility for decontamination
  • Supervises any assigned support staff

Minimum Requirements

Education: MSc or PhD degree in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Veterinary Sciences or related fields.

Experience: At least 3 years of scientific research experience in microbiology laboratories, especially with viruses, is essential. Experience in BSL3/ABSL3 laboratories is preferable. Being familiar with high level international biosafety and biosecurity measures is a plus.

Language Skills: English (Advanced); the interview will be in English.

Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office, and Data Backup for PCs.
